Regular Season Round 123: Portland TB - Houston R. 105-100

Date: March 11, 2015
The Trail Blazers donned "With Wes" T-shirts during warmups, honoring injured shooting guard Wesley Matthews, who is out for the season after undergoing surgery on his torn Achilles tendon. Then Portland handled the Houston Rockets, showing it might be alright without Wes. The Blazers bottled up Rockets guard James Harden and held off a late Houston rally for a 105-100 win Wednesday night at the Moda Center. "It was a big game for us and we all knew it and I thought everybody was locked in, focused and ready to go," Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge said. "I thought guys played great. We played great defense, concentrated at both ends of the floor." Harden finished with 18 points and six assists, but the Blazers made him work for his offense and kept him off the free throw line. Houston's MVP candidate shot 7-for-19 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free line, after averaging 18 free throws in the first two meetings with Portland this season. "I thought Arron (Afflalo) and Nic (Batum) did a very good job on him," Blazers coach Terry Stotts said of his team's defense against Harden. "As a team, we did a nice job of corralling him, but those two guys worked really hard to try and take away some of the things he does well." Batum continued his post All-Star break surge with 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists, Aldridge added 26 points and 14 rebounds and Robin Lopez had a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. The Blazers looked primed to put the game away early in the fourth, but Corey Brewer, who scored 17 of his team-high 23 points in fourth quarter, fueled a late Houston rally. Portland led by double digits four minutes into fourth quarter before the Rockets made a run. Houston cut the Blazers lead to 99-95 with just over a minute to go and looked like it might pull off an impressive comeback. Rockets forward Trevor Ariza had a chance to trim the lead to one, but was off the mark on a clean look at three. Afflalo added two free throws on the other end to push the Blazers lead back to six, but Brewer wouldn't let the Rockets go down quietly. First, he hit a quick three-pointer to cut the lead to three. The Rockets chose not to foul and Brewer pressured Damian Lillard into a turnover near midcourt, getting away with an arm grab as he forced the ball out. Brewer's fast break dunk the cut the Blazers lead to one. The Rockets intentionally fouled Afflalo with 15.2 seconds left and he calmly hit two free throws, giving the Rockets one last chance to force overtime. Brewer's potential game-tying three-pointer fell short and Lillard added two free throws for the final margin. Courtesy of: oregonlive.com
