Regular Season Round 131: LA Lakers - Utah Jazz 73-80
Date: March 19, 2015
There are going to be nights when the Jazz struggle. There are going to be nights when Utah has tired legs, where all the elements go against them on the road, where a win just doesn't seem to be in the offing. Thursday seemed to be one of those nights for the Jazz, facing a rested Los Angeles Lakers team while they were clearly fatigued. Yes, the ingredients were in place for a Utah defeat. And yet, the Jazz wouldn't allow that to happen. In what can best be termed a "grind it out" affair, Utah went back and forth with Los Angeles and ultimately prevailed 80-73 before 17,407 at the Staples Center. "That's exactly what kind of win it was, it was gritty," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. "Guys started out slow, but you could see it in the guys in the huddle, they raised their level of play. This was good to see tonight." The Jazz won this game with a toughness they have exhibited throughout the month of March. They won this game because they made big shots in a timely fashion, even with scoring at an extreme premium. They won this game because they had different guys step up whenever needed. Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors and Trey Burke all - at times - carried the team through crucial moments. Hayward had a huge third quarter. Favors was money on both ends, finishing on offense and providing an anchor defensively. Burke was a man off the bench, making shots, getting into the paint at will and compromising the Lakers defense with dribble penetration. And when the fourth quarter came around, so did Burke. Having a good game for the second consecutive night, Burke made several huge shots down the stretch, even bigger when you consider how much attention Los Angeles was giving to Favors and Hayward defensively. Burke's game was much needed, since the starting rookie backcourt of Dante Exum and Rodney Hood provided just a single basket. Indeed, both players struggled mightily, combining to go 0-11 on the night with five assists between the two of them. So Burke stepped in, scored 17 huge points and did it efficiently, on 7-11 shooting from the field. "We showed a lot of maturity tonight," Burke said. "We played hard, and we stayed locked in for 48 minutes. That's the kind of thing we have to continue doing." With the win, the Jazz move to 31-37 on the season. They win for the seventh time in eight games and they avenge a bad loss to the Lakers three weeks ago at EnergySolutions Arena. Hayward was big in the second half, dominating on both sides of the floor. He was the best player in uniform on either team, and he made shots and put pressure on the Lakers defensively. He finished with a game-high 22 points, and added five assists and five rebounds to go with it. When Hayward realized his shot wasn't falling with frequency, he drove into the lane and got himself to the foul line. Favors had 14 points and seven rebounds. Trevor Booker was good off the bench with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Rudy Gobert had perhaps his first really subpar game since the all-star break, scoring three points, but grabbing just seven rebounds. He also wasn't his normal self defensively in the lane. And yet, the Jazz worked through all of that. They found a way to win despite an offense that couldn't seem to get moving, and they found a way to play their usual defense. Utah held the Lakers to 40 percent shooting from the field. Los Angeles shot just 3-11 from the 3-point line, and they turned the ball over 16 times against Utah's defense. Ultimately, that Jazz defense carried them on Thursday night. And it allowed them to win, even if that win came ugly. "We just found a way to win tonight," Hayward said. "We made great plays when we needed to make them." Courtesy of: sltrib.com
