Regular Season Round 132: Brooklyn N. - Milwaukee B. 129-127 OT

Date: March 20, 2015
Brook Lopez stood in the lane and glared straight ahead as all of Barclays Center roared around him. For 63 minutes Friday night, the Nets fought for their playoff lives. But it was Lopez who pushed them past a familiar face and through the finish. It took three overtimes to do it, but the Nets beat the Bucks 129-127 securing their most important win of the season. Lopez scored five quick points to start the final overtime. Then he added a pivotal block - and a stare to go with it - to give the Nets the momentum on an epic and meaningful night. The Nets (28-39) are 11 games under .500 but only 1 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot in the East. Tonight, they play a pivotal game against Indiana (30-38) - the first game of three consecutive against teams immediately ahead of them in the standings: Brooklyn hosts Boston (30-38) on Monday and plays at Charlotte (29-37) on Wednesday. This was a big step forward in their push for the playoffs. But nothing about it was easy. The Nets trailed late in regulation. They missed a game-winning shot in the first overtime. And they trailed late in the second overtime. But somehow, they got the win. 'I have been in a lot of [multiple] overtime games both as a player and also as a coach, Nets coach Lionel Hollins said. 'And this was an amazing game. It looked like we were dead in the water for a minute, and all of the sudden we come back Milwaukee (34-35) nearly came back, too. Khris Middleton missed two late three-pointers that could have forced a fourth overtime. Middleton's second three-pointer, with less than 10 seconds left, went in and out. The Nets got their first win over former coach and franchise legend Jason Kidd, who controversially left the franchise last summer and was booed resoundingly before the game. 'It was a fight, Kidd said. 'Guys were giving it everything they had. Everybody spent a lot of energy tonight, that's what it takes for us to win, but unfortunately we came up with the L. The Bucks led most the game, pushing their lead to as many as 14 points in the third quarter. And with 1:19 remaining in regulation, Milwaukee led by there. But the left Joe Johnson wide open for a three-pointer, which he drained to tie the game at 101. Still, Giannis Antetokounmpo had the game in his giant, capable hands. He attempted a mid-range shot at the regulation buzzer that would have won it for Milwaukee, but it rimmed out and the game headed to overtime. 'I had a chance to send it home, Antetokounmpo said. 'But I didn't make the shot. It felt good when it left my hand. In the first overtime, Bojan Bogdanovic drained an open corner three-pointer with 19.7 seconds left to give the Nets a 111-109 lead - it was his biggest shot as a Net. But Antetokounmpo quickly got in the paint and tied the game at 111 with 15.8 seconds left. The Nets put the ball in the hands of Johnson, who found space for a 15-foot jumper just before the overtime buzzer sounded. But it hit the back of the rim, and the game went to double overtime tied at 111. Late in the second overtime, Milwaukee led 117-114. But out of a timeout, Johnson got open for a quick three-pointer and nailed it to tie the game at 117 with 18.1 seconds left. Deafening noise filled Barclays. 'I thought that if anybody can get a quick shot off, it would be Joe, Hollins said of the play that sprung Johnson. 'And the way the play worked out, they took away the top and left sideline open and we were able to get a wide open look. '[The Nets] set a great screen, Kidd said of Johnson's three-pointer. 'And got off a great shot. And that's what big players do. He stepped up and made the big three. Middleton got a look at 15-footer to win the game, but it missed. The teams headed to a third overtime, where Lopez quickly swung the momentum. First came a three-point play, on a dunk over Irsan Ilyasova. Not only did Lopez dunk all over Ilyasova, but the Bucks big man fouled out of the game on the play. 'It was just a good look, Lopez said. 'They had to respect [Jarrett] Jack coming off the pick and roll, and he made a great pass so I was able to finish it easy. Ilyasova watched shell-shocked from the bench as Lopez scored another basket. Then, Lopez blocked Michael Carter Williams sending the arena into its loudest roar of the night. 'He had a great game, Hollins said. 'Everybody seemed to have a moment in the game where they did something that sparked us. Lopez had 32 points and 18 rebounds in 41 minutes. Thaddeus Young had 24 points in a career-high 52 minutes. 'My legs are super-tired, Young said. 'Three overtimes? I think hat's the first time I ever did that in my career, and I don't want to do it again. Deron Williams scored only four points on 1-of-6 shooting. He didn't play the fourth quarter, the first overtime or the third overtime. Hollins said Williams was healthy, he just chose to go with Jarrett Jack (12 points and seven assists in 40 minutes) instead. Meanwhile, Antetokounmpo had 23 points and 14 rebounds in 53 minutes. Middleton led all players with 55 minutes. Remarkably, Zaza Pachulia had 18 offensive rebounds, to go with his 22 points. The Bucks 38 offensive rebounds were the most since the NBA began tracking that stat in 1985. That wasn't the only history made on this night. Back in November, the Nets lost to the Bucks in triple overtime. But this time, they conquered. According to ESPN Stats & Info it's the first time in NBA history two teams multiple three-overtime games in the same season. Courtesy of: northjersey.com
