Regular Season Round 135: Brooklyn N. - Boston C. 91-110
Date: March 23, 2015
The Nets had spent the last week looking like a team that was finally figuring it out. They insisted that they were playing some of their best basketball of the season at the perfect time - when it mattered. And so Monday was a perfect chance to prove it. This was a chance to build some much-needed momentum at home in a game with massive playoff implications. This one mattered. But in the final minutes of an embarrassing 110-91 loss to Boston, Barclays Center filled with chants of 'Celtics. And it was very clear that the Nets have figured out nothing - least of all, how to play good basketball in Brooklyn. 'I don't know, said Brook Lopez, when asked about the Nets' 12-20 record at Barclays Center. 'It's bizarre. And on this night, it was costly. This was the kind of loss that could come back to haunt Brooklyn a few weeks from now. The Nets (29-40) had the chance to move ahead of the Celtics (31-39) in the East. With a win, they would have grabbed control of the final playoff spot and moved ahead of three teams - the Pacers (30-40), Charlotte (30-39) and Celtics. Instead, they fell a 1 games behind Boston, which now occupies that playoff spot. Worse yet, Brooklyn allowed the Celtics to take the season series, 3-1, giving Boston the all-important tiebreaker. The Celtics were supposed to be the young, rebuilding squad looking toward the future. But now they're looking down at the high-priced, veteran Nets. 'It hurts, Joe Johnson said. 'We wanted to win this game. We understand where we are, and to keep climbing, this is a game that we had to [have]. Well, not exactly, because despite an awful loss, there was good news: The bottom of the Eastern Conference still is desolate wasteland where good basketball goes to die. Despite being 11 games under .500, the Nets woke up this morning only two games out of the No. 7 spot and only 4 behind Milwaukee for No. 6. No wonder the mood in the locker room was upbeat, despite the ugly result. If Brooklyn wins Wednesday night in Charlotte, it'll be right back in the playoff race. But the Nets have to play nine of their final 13 games at home. And that's not good, considering they're the only team in basketball with a worse home record (12-20) than road record (17-20). 'It definitely stinks that we can't give our fans something to cheer about, said guard Deron Williams (10 points, 10 assists), who came an assist short of his first career triple-double. It shouldn't have been surprising to hear the Celtics chant in the final moments. After booing early in the fourth quarter, the fans apparently knew what was coming. 'Our crowd, sometimes they're with us, sometimes they're not, Alan Anderson said. 'When we're playing like that, what do you expect? Brooklyn started strong, dominating the first quarter. But it all fell apart from there. The porous defense allowed six Celtics to score in double figures. Boston shot 51.1 percent from the field, while the Nets hit on 36 percent and only 1-of-17 from three-point range. 'Ultimately, we couldn't stop them, Nets coach Lionel Hollins said. 'And we couldn't score. Courtesy of: northjersey.com
