Regular Season Round 143: Brooklyn N. - Indiana P. 111-106
Date: March 31, 2015
It's still probably too early to trust the Nets' progress. There have been too many times this season when this team seemed to have it all figured out, only to un-figure it out very quickly. But the way they played Tuesday night was a promising sign that perhaps this time is different. The Nets beat the Pacers, 111-106, at Barclays Center - a result that was as meaningful for the Nets' psyche as it was in the standings. Brooklyn (33-40) now has sole possession of the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, a half-game ahead of Boston. The Nets have won eight of their last 10 games. They went the first 70 games of the season without a winning streak longer than three games. They now have won four straight. But more than standings or streaks is the vibe surrounding this team. It's different. There's a composure that hasn't been there all season. The prime example came early in the game. Brooklyn built a 19-point lead early in the second quarter. It seemed it would be in for an easy night. And then, before halftime, that lead was completely gone. The Pacers outscored the Nets, 39-24, in the second quarter; they even briefly took a lead. Earlier in the season, the Nets would not have recovered from such a cataclysm. But on this night, they took the Pacers punch and shrugged it off. 'Let's put it as it is: We're more together, Nets coach Lionel Hollins said. 'We care more about each other. When you're as one, when you have adversity, you just pull together and keep fighting. As the stakes have risen, the mentality has most certainly changed. The Nets are more mentally tough than they were earlier this season. But why? 'I don't know, guard Deron Williams said. 'I guess a sense of urgency. Realizing we have a chance to make these playoffs. Tuesday's game went a long way toward improving Brooklyn's chances to qualify for the postseason. It was worth more than just a game in the standings. With the win, the Nets won the season series over the Pacers, 2-1. They now have the critical tiebreaker advantage to go with their 1-game cushion over Indiana. Brook Lopez led the way with 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Joe Johnson added 21 points, six rebounds and four assists. Even though the Nets led, 33-15, after the first quarter, the Pacers were relentless. Not only did they fight back from that first-quarter deficit, they stormed back again in the fourth quarter. Despite leading by 12 with just more than five minutes left, the Nets' lead was trimmed to 103-100 with two minutes left. Brooklyn needed two clutch baskets from Johnson and a couple of big defensive plays to seal it. 'We stayed at home, Hollins said of the late defense. 'We switched when we had to. I just thought we played very smart and very disciplined. The Nets' 8-2 mark over the last 10 games ties them with Cleveland for the best mark in the East over that stretch. It's even more impressive considering Brooklyn embarked on this run after a five-game losing streak that seemed to dash their playoff hopes. After tonight's game against the Knicks, the Nets have five consecutive games against winning teams. If they're going to make the playoffs, the Nets will have to prove they belong.
