Regular Season Round 148: Brooklyn N. - Portland TB 106-96

Date: April 6, 2015
The Trail Blazers boarded their cross country flight to play one game in Brooklyn on Monday and forgot to pack a few key players. Veterans LaMarcus Aldridge, Nicolas Batum and Chris Kaman stayed back in Portland to rest nagging injuries, leaving the Blazers short-handed against the Brooklyn Nets. The Blazers looked like they might make it interesting in the first quarter, but missing three key pieces eventually caught up with Portland in an 106-96 loss Monday night at Barclays Center. "I like the way we came back in the first quarter, we got out to a good start," Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "We just didn't quite have enough." The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 26, but Winter Storm Juno led to the postponement and forced the Blazers into their own version of escape from New York. In their return trip more than two months after the original date, the Blazers got out to a solid start. Portland grabbed a 25-22 after one quarter, but the game got away in the second. The Nets went on an 24-5 run over the final 8:30 of the second quarter to take a 54-38 lead into the break. Portland shot 4 of 18 in the second quarter as Brooklyn outscored the Blazers 32-13. The Nets led by as much as 22 points in the third quarter before Portland cut into the deficit in the fourth. "I think it was a very winnable game for us," Blazers guard CJ McCollum said. "I think that third quarter hurt us a little bit, down by 22, it took a lot of energy to get back into the game and brought it to down eight, but we couldn't get over the hump. No games are given away in the NBA." The Blazers were missing a combined 42 points and 23 rebounds with Aldridge, Batum and Kaman out of the lineup, but the rest of the roster nearly made up for the missing firepower. The Blazers pulled within 89-83 with 4:38 left before Nets responded with seven quick points to end hopes of a miracle comeback. Damian Lillard led Portland with 36 points and McCollum added 15 points, recording four consecutive double-digit scoring games for the first time in his career. Meyers Leonard had his best statistical game of the season against the Nets and showed the type of confidence and aggression that made resting Aldridge for a game seem like a worthwhile development plan. Leonard had 17 points, a team-high four assists and a career-high 15 rebounds. He scored 15 of his points in the fourth quarter, adding a trio of highlight dunks, to lead the Blazers comeback push. "We came here with the mentality that we could win," Leonard said. "They're fighting for their playoff lives and we're down Kaman and Nico (Batum), but that's no excuse. We still had guys and weapons." Portland outscored Brooklyn 56-52 in the second half, but the Nets' second quarter dominance proved to be too much. Brook Lopez had 32 points and nine rebounds and Deron Williams added 22 points and 10 assists for the Nets. Brooklyn overcame an 0 of 9 shooting night from starting guard Joe Johnson thanks to 15 points off the bench from Bojan Bogdanovic. Courtesy of: oregonlive.com
