Regular Season Round 152: San Antonio S. - Houston R. 104-103
Date: April 10, 2015
In a game filled with runs, a lot of whistles, and a hack-a-Josh Smith strategy; Friday's Western Conference showdown between the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs came down to the final play. Tim Duncan blocked a would-be game-winning lay-up attempt by James Harden in the final seconds to seal a 104-103 win for the Spurs at Toyota Center. The Rockets started the first quarter looking nothing like the team that trailed the Spurs by as many as 22 points on Wednesday. The Rockets scored the game's first 12 points and led by as many as 13. The Spurs mounted a rally to close within five, but a Harden bucket with 10.3 seconds left gave the Rockets a 30-23 lead at the end of the first period. The Rockets led 48-46 at the break as the Spurs were able to chip away at the Rockets lead by outscoring them 23-18 in the period. The Spurs trimmed the Rockets lead further in the third and eventually grabbed their first lead of the game in the final minute of the third stanza. The fourth quarter was perhaps dominated by the Spurs' strategy of hacking Josh Smith. Smith finished the game 12-of-26 from the free-throw line. He hit nine-of-16 from the charity stripe in the fourth. San Antonio stayed ahead, but they were never too far in front. When Harden bounced in a three with 28.9 seconds left, the Rockets were within one, 104-103. And when the Spurs turned it over on the ensuing possession, Houston had one more opportunity with 6.1 seconds left, setting up the final attempt by Harden that ultimately was unsuccessful. With the loss, the Rockets dip from the third seed to the sixth seed in the Western Conference. The Spurs with their win move to the third seed in the West .5 game behind the Memphis Grizzlies. Smith led the Rockets with 20 points. Trevor Ariza had 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-5 from three-point land. Harden and Dwight Howard both finished with double doubles - Harden with 16 points and 10 assists, Howard with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Duncan led the Spurs with 29 points and 10 rebounds. The Rockets have not lost three in a row all season and will look to break their current skid on Sunday when they host the New Orleans Pelicans for a 6:00 tipoff. Courtesy of: cbslocal.com
