Regular Season Round 153: Memphis G. - LA Clippers 86-94
Date: April 11, 2015
Falling in the Western Conference standings might now be the least of the Grizzlies' concerns. They keep losing key players to injury. Grizzlies center Marc Gasol suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter Saturday night and didn't return in a 94-86 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers in Staples Center. Gasol logged nearly 10 minutes. He tried to continue playing but eventually asked out of the game and went to the locker room for treatment. Gasol returned to the Grizzlies' bench in the second quarter. However, the 7-footer never re-entered the game and was ruled out at halftime. The Griz didn't fold. The Clippers couldn't sew a comfortable cushion until the final five minutes. J.J. Redick curled off a screen and buried a 3-pointer after the game knotted at 79 with 5:39 remaining in the game. After Jeff Green scored for the Griz, Chris Paul extended the Clippers' lead to 87-81 by scoring five straight points. The Griz led 75-74 with eight minutes remaining. Zach Randolph put Memphis ahead after he recovered his own missed free throw and scored on a put-back. Memphis' deficit was just 69-68 heading into the fourth after dominating the final few minutes of the third quarter with strong defense. Los Angeles led by 11 points with 4:37 left in third but didn't score the rest of the period. The Griz kept battling to hang around in a low-scoring game. Literally. Tempers flared with 3:54 left in the third quarter when Griz reserve center Kosta Koufos and Clippers forward Blake Griffin got tangled up. The players crashed to the court after jostling for a rebound. Griffin fell on top of Koufos and Koufos shoved Griffin off of him. The officials gave both players a technical foul. The Griz got the game at their pace in the second half. The Clippers had been averaging 105 points over the past 12 games. But they were slowed down in the third quarter after controlling tempo in the first half. Still, neither team led by more than six points in the first half. Memphis trailed 52-49 at the intermission.
