1/8 Finals Round 1: Memphis G. - Portland TB 100-86

Date: April 19, 2015
LaMarcus Aldridge wheeled into the lane, went up for a right-handed hook, met a wall of seven-footers and ended up on his back as the third quarter buzzer sounded. He extended his arms in exasperation, looking for a foul call or just some answers as to how to stop a Game 1 beat down against the Memphis Grizzlies. Instead the Trail Blazers All-Star forward had to settle for a long, disappointed walk down the floor to the bench waiting to start the final quarter in a 24-point blowout. "We got our (butt) kicked," Aldridge said when asked to describe what happened in Game 1. "It was a good wake up call for us," he continued. "But I think definitely tonight they manhandled us." It was a frustrating night to be sure, featuring a lot of Aldridge attacking on his own, the Grizzlies dominating physically and Portland looking around for answers. Memphis controlled the game from the opening tip, taking a 1-0 lead in the first-round Western Conference playoff series against the Blazers with a leave-no-doubts 100-86 victory Sunday night at FedEx Forum. "We let down a little bit. That's why they got the big lead in the first half," Blazers forward Nicolas Batum said. "We were down 20 after 24 minutes and that's tough to come back against them." Aldridge finished with 32 points and 14 rebounds, but the Grizzlies made him work for everything. He shot 13-for-34 from the floor, and despite the 22 missed shots, he was the lone bright spot in an ugly loss. Damian Lillard went 5-for-21 from the floor, finishing with 14 points and seemed to press all night. He missed all six of his three-point attempts, including a disastrous pull-up air ball, and went 4 for 7 at the free throw line. "The good looks I did get, they didn't fall and didn't get any easier," Lillard said. "I just have to keep taking shots and keep shooting with confidence. I know that some point it will come back around." CJ McCollum got his first career playoff start in place of injured Arron Afflalo, but never found a rhythm. He had just two points on 1 of 8 shooting. While the Blazers backcourt forced drives and put up bricks, Memphis' guards controlled the game. Mike Conley finished with 16 points and his backup Beno Udrih came off the bench to finish with 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Zach Randolph (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Marc Gasol (15 points, 11 rebounds) alternated between working the paint and splashing midrange jumpers. The concerns about Memphis' health coming into the game where Conley, Tony Allen and Jeff Green were all listed as 'questionable' on the injury report were quickly erased. Instead the questions turned to the Blazers and whether Portland's offense can find a rhythm against the swarming, physical Grizzlies. Or whether the Blazers can slow the Grizzlies on defense enough to even give their offense a chance. Riding Aldridge post-ups and wing isolations is a formula that has worked during the playoffs in the past. Aldridge virtually single-handedly won two games in Houston to open the playoffs a year ago. But against the Grizzlies, who have more bodies to throw at him and more success making him work for his offense, Aldridge is going to need help. If he ends up on his back looking for answers in Game 2 it could be a short series for the Trail Blazers. In the locker room after the game, Nicolas Batum saw a bright side in an otherwise embarrassing defeat. "Nothing can be worse than that," Batum said. "That's the only positive thing tonight."
