Puerto Rico claimed the opening victory in Toronto. They rallied past Dominican Republic in Group A. Carla Cortijo stepped up with 15 points and 8 boards to pace the winners. Puerto Rico piled up a 49:28 halftime lead. Dominican Republic pulled within 15 points at the final intermission. But Puerto Rico held their opponents to just 7 points in the fourth quarter to rally to the win. Marie Placido accounted for 14 points and 6 rebounds in the victory. Sugeiry Monsac responded with 16 points for Dominican Republic.
