Regular Season Round 5: Alcazar - Gran Canaria 71-62

There was a minor upset when 3rd placed Gran Canaria (1-1) was defeated on the road by ninth ranked Alcazar (1-1) 71-62 on Saturday. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 21-11. But Gran Canaria won third quarter 24-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Forward Ignacio Diaz (200-87) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 12 rebounds for the winners and American guard Lamonte Thomas (187-90, college: J.and Wales, RI) chipped in 18 points. Guard Joaquin Portugues (185-95) responded with 20 points and Senegalese forward Mouhamed Barro (205-95) scored 7 points and 9 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Alcazar left bottom position moving up to fifth place in Group B, which they share with 5 other teams including defeated Gran Canaria. Alcazar will face Casvi (#12) in Villaviciosa in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Gran Canaria will play at home against Estudiantes B (#7) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
