Regular Season Round 1: N.Orleans P. - Golden St.W. 95-111
Date: October 27, 2015
On opening night, the New Orleans Pelicans matched up against the defending champion Golden State Warriors with only nine available players because of their mounting injuries. The Pelicans got ambushed from dazzling plays from reigning MVP Stephen Curry to persistent ball movement, spacing and stout defensive play by the entire Warriors team. It left Alvin Gentry unable to enjoy his debut game as he watched his team suffer a 111-95 loss in front of a sellout crowd of 19,596 at Oracle Arena. Before the game, Gentry was presented with his championship ring during a festive ring ceremony. He served as the Warriors' lead assistant and was in charge of their offense. And that offense was at mid-season performance level. Curry was unstoppable, scoring 40 points, including 24 in the first quarter. Golden State scored 52 points in the paint. They did what they do best; they pushed the pace and attacked whenever they wanted. Defensively, they locked into Anthony Davis, who never got into a rhythm. For the entire game, he was forced to take tough shots. Davis, who averaged 31.5 points against the Warriors in last season's first-round series, scored six points in the first half, four of them free throws. The Pelicans' offense in the first half mostly came Dante Cunningham, Kendrick Perkins and Ish Smith, who was signed Monday and only had a shootaround practice Tuesday morning to prepare for the game. The Pelicans hung tough with the Warriors in the first quarter, despite a dazzling display of shooting from Curry. Curry was 9-of-13 in the first quarter, easily penetrating the lane for layups and also making 4-of-7 3-pointers. Yet New Orleans trailed by only four at the end of quarter. But the Pelicans' offense became undone with their inability to take away driving lanes and effectively contest shots on the perimeter. The Warriors held them to 14 points on 6-of-24 shooting in the second quarter for a 59-49 halftime lead. The Pelicans gave starting point guard Jrue Holiday the night off to have him ready for Wednesday night's game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Nate Robinson replaced Holiday in the lineup, but two fouls 3 minutes sent him to the bench, and he was a non-factor. Courtesy of: nola.com
