Regular Season Round 5: Alba Iulia - MBK Ruzomb. 76-73

Round 5 in Central Europe Women League means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Alba Iulia where host Romanian Alba Iulia (2-0) edged Slovakian MBK Ruzomberok (2-1) 76-73 on Wednesday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of MBK Ruzomberok. It was a key game for the top position in Group A. MBK Ruzomberok trailed by 19 points at halftime and as many as 21 after three quarters before a 32-14 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 73-76 at the end of the game. Alba Iulia outrebounded MBK Ruzomberok 30-19 including 24 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. 24 personal fouls committed by MBK Ruzomberok helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was American guard Vanessa Abel (165-89, college: Duquesne) who scored 19 points and 5 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Sonia Ursu (175-93) chipped in 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Alba Iulia's coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Center Eva Kmetova (188-87, agency: Regeneracom Sports) produced 18 points and swingman Dominika Baburova (179-91) added 13 points and 6 assists respectively for the guests. Four MBK Ruzomberok players scored in double figures. Alba Iulia keeps a position of Group A leader. MBK Ruzomberok at the other side dropped to the second place with one game lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Alba Iulia. MBK Ruzomberok will play next round against strong Basket Slovanka MB trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Alba Iulia will try to continue on its current victory against fourth ranked Basket Slovanka MB in Vodochody.
