Regular Season Round 5: Guantanamo - Santiago 71-95

Date: January 22, 2016
Quite upsetting was Guantanamo's (#6) 24-point home defeat in a game versus seventh ranked Santiago who smashed hosts . They dominated down low during the game scoring 70 of its points in the paint compared to Guantanamo's 40. The best player for the winners was Eddy Hechevarria (193-86) who scored 20 points and 7 rebounds. International forward Esteban Martinez (192-87) chipped in 25 points. Four Santiago players scored in double figures. The former international swingman Yoannis Soria (195-86) produced 30 points and point guard Rafael Favier (179-89) added 11 points and 4 assists respectively for the hosts. Guantanamo's coach William Pell gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Santiago (2-3) moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Pinar del Rio. Guantanamo lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the bottom position with four games lost. Santiago will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Guantanamo will play again against Santiago (#5) and hope to win that game.
