WNBL top team - Townsville Fire (15-6) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed eighth ranked Boomers (7-15) in Melbourne 84-60. The game was mostly controlled by Townsville Fire. Boomers managed to win fourth quarter 18-10. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Boomers to just 7 points in first quarter. Townsville Fire made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Boomers 39-28 including 26 on the defensive glass. The former international center Cayla George (192-89) fired a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. American guard Natalie Novosel (180-89, college: Notre Dame, agency: LBM Management) chipped in 20 points. Guard Madeleine Garrick (178-92) produced 24 points and forward Olivia Thompson (185-93) added 10 points and 8 rebounds respectively for lost side. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Townsville Fire have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 15-6 record. Boomers lost eighth consecutive game. They keep the eighth place with 15 games lost. Townsville Fire will meet at home league's second-placed Dandenong Rangers in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Boomers will play against Adelaide Lightning (#7) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
