Regular Season Round 5: Manati - Arecibo 83-108

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both seventh ranked Capitanes and 9th ranked Manati had identical 2-2 record. But Manati was not able to use a home court advantage and was crushed by the opponent from Arecibo 108-83 on Saturday night. The game was mostly controlled by Capitanes. Manati was better in second period 27-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Capitanes dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Manati's 36 and made 19-of-23 free shots (82.6 percent) during the game. Capitanes looked well-organized offensively handing out 34 assists comparing to just 19 passes made by Manati's players. The best player for the winners was international forward Renaldo Balkman (203-84, college: S.Carolina) who had a triple-double by scoring 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. American center Chris Johnson (210-85, college: LSU) chipped in 28 points and 7 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field). Five Capitanes players scored in double figures. Capitanes' coach Rafael Cruz felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. Point guard Ricardo Melendez (179-83) produced 22 points and American forward Landon Milbourne (201-87, college: Maryland) added 19 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Capitanes have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Guayama. Manati lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the sixth position with three games lost. Capitanes will face Vaqueros (#9) in Bayamon in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Manati will play at home against Santeros and hope to win that game.
