Regular Season Round 8: San German - Bayamon 88-105

There was an upset in San German where higher ranked Atleticos (4-4) were defeated by tenth ranked Vaqueros (3-5) 105-88 on Saturday. It was a very close game until the last quarter, when Vaqueros's pressure prevailed and they won that period 30-15 extending their advantage to 17 points. They dominated down low during the game scoring 74 of its points in the paint compared to Atleticos' 20. Vaqueros forced 19 Atleticos turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 32 assists comparing to just 14 passes made by Atleticos' players. Atleticos were plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was Nigerian center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, college: Chicago St., agency: Beo Basket) who scored 23 points and 9 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field). Dominican swingman Francisco Garcia (201-81, college: Louisville) chipped in 18 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. American point guard Raymond Cintron Cortes (183-90, college: Middle Tenn.St.) produced 24 points and 5 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) and forward Benito Santiago (198, college: Cumberlands) added 22 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Vaqueros moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Ponce and Aguada. Atleticos at the other side keep the fifth position with four games lost. Vaqueros will face Indios (#10) in Mayaguez in the next round. Atleticos will play at home against Indios (#10) and hope to win that game.
