Regular Season Round 9: Arecibo - Ponce 86-77

The game had a very big importance for third-ranked Capitanes as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Capitanes defeated 8th ranked Leones in Arecibo 86-77. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 28-22. But Leones won second period 17-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Capitanes looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a good game for international forward Renaldo Balkman (203-84, college: S.Carolina) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists. The former international swingman David Huertas (195-87, college: Mississippi) contributed with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists for the winners. Four Capitanes players scored in double figures. The former international swingman Angel Daniel Vassallo (198-86, college: Virginia Tech) answered with 20 points and 4 assists and American-Dominican swingman James Maye (201-81, college: NC-Greensboro) added 19 points in the effort for Leones. Leones' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Capitanes (6-2) have an impressive series of six victories in a row. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Humacao. Defending champion Leones dropped to the bottom place with six games lost. They share the position with Bayamon and Manati. Leones will play next round against strong Brujos trying to get back on the winning streak. Capitanes will try to continue on its current victory against fifth ranked Indios in Mayaguez.
