Tenth ranked Leones won a double-overtime thriller edging higher ranked Piratas by one point 99-98 on Tuesday night. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Piratas. The hosts were tied at the half and again at the end of regular time. But they managed to win double-overtime period 10-10. Leones dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Piratas' 38. They outrebounded Piratas 49-33 including a 39-28 advantage in defensive rebounds. Leones looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Piratas were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a great evening for the former international swingman Angel Daniel Vassallo (198-86, college: Virginia Tech) who led his team to a victory scoring 20 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. American Dominic McGuire (206-85, college: Fresno St.) helped adding 16 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Leones' coach Nelson Colon used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The former international Elias Ayuso (190-77, college: USC, agency: Paris Global Sports) responded with 20 points and 9 assists and the former international center Jorge Bryan Diaz (210-89, college: Nebraska) produced a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds. Four Leones and five Piratas players scored in double figures. Defending champion maintains tenth place with 9-14 record. Piratas at the other side dropped to the sixth position with 14 games lost. Leones will face higher ranked Vaqueros (#3) in Bayamon in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
