Regular Season Round 29: Arecibo - Ponce 74-86

There was an upset in Arecibo where second-ranked Capitanes (15-12) were defeated by tenth ranked Leones (13-16) 86-74 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Leones. Capitanes was better in second period 22-12. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Leones looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by Capitanes' players. American power forward Denzel Bowles (208-89, college: JMU) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and the former international swingman Angel Daniel Vassallo (198-86, college: Virginia Tech) chipped in 25 points and 5 assists. Leones' coach Nelson Colon used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The former international guard Guillermo Diaz (188-85, college: Miami, FL) responded with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) and American center Chris Johnson (210-85, college: LSU) produced a double-double by scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds. Four Capitanes players scored in double figures. Defending champion moved-up to ninth place, which they share with San German. Loser Capitanes dropped to the third position with 12 games lost. Leones will face league's second-placed Caciques in Humacao in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
