Mexico outlasted US Virgin Islands in overtime to secure the first victory at the tournament. Francisco Cruz came up with 27 points for the defending champions. Mexico recorded a 34:30 halftime lead. US Virgin Islands however dropped 29 points in the third term to eke out a 3-point lead. Mexico avoided upset first sending the game into overtime and then clinching a tough victory. Hector Hernandez tossed in 23 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the winners. Ivan Aska answered with 22 points and 7 rebounds for US Virgin Islands.
