Regular Season Round 8: Atenienses - Leonas 83-81

Important game to mention about took place in Manati. Fifth ranked Atenienses (4-2) saved a 2-point victory at home edging 6th ranked Leonas (2-4) 83-81 on Saturday evening. The hosts were ahead by 3 points but lost the second period ending it with a 4-point deficit before their 25-19 run, which allowed them to win the game. Atenienses outrebounded Leonas 45-27 including a 36-25 advantage in defensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists. Atenienses brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. The winners were led by international center Sandra Garcia (190-90, college: Wake Forest) who scored that evening 22 points and 9 rebounds and American forward Rebecca Tobin (195-88, college: Arizona St.) supported her with 12 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks. Even 29 points by American guard Tierra Henderson (178-87, college: UCLA) did not help to save the game for Leonas. The former international forward Marie Placido (181-87, agency: Gamble Sports Management) added 13 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Atenienses moved-up to third place, which they share with Indias. Leonas at the other side keep the sixth position with four games lost. Atenienses will play against Indias (#3) in Mayaguez in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Leonas will have a break next round.
