Regular Season Round 16: Atenienses - Gigantes 62-96

Rather predictable result when first ranked Gigantes (11-3) rolled over 5th ranked Atenienses (6-6) in Manati 96-62 on Tuesday. The game was mostly controlled by Gigantes. Atenienses was better in second period 17-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Atenienses to just 6 points in first quarter. Gigantes dominated down low during the game scoring 70 of its points in the paint compared to Atenienses' 42. Gigantes forced 20 Atenienses turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. It was a very good performance for American guard Alexis Hornbuckle (180-85, college: Tennessee) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 26 points and 11 rebounds. The other American import forward Markel Walker (185-90, college: UCLA) contributed with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Four Gigantes players scored in double figures. International center Angelica Bermudez (185-89, college: Kean, agency: Gamble Sports Management) replied with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds and guard Rita Acevedo (168-92, college: PR-Rio Piedras) added 9 points and 6 assists in the effort for Atenienses. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Gigantes have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 11-3 record, which they share with Montaneras. Atenienses lost third consecutive game. They keep the fifth place with six games lost. Gigantes will face Cangrejeras (#6) in Santurce in the next round where they are favorite.
