Regular Season Round 18: Lady Cardinals - Montaneras 57-73

Bottom-ranked Lady Cardinals (0-15) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 73-57 loss to second ranked Montaneras (12-3) in Lajas on Friday evening. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. The guests trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 16-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 73-57. Montaneras dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Lady Cardinals' 28. They outrebounded Lady Cardinals 62-27 including a 26-4 advantage in offensive rebounds. Montaneras looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American forward Shae Kelley (185-91, college: Minnesota) had a double-double by scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and the other American import center Sasha Goodlett (195-90, college: Georgia Tech) chipped in 15 points and 12 rebounds during the contest. Montaneras' coach used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was American forward Maria Blazejewski (185-91, college: L.Superior) with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists and Dominican Charlenny Frias (170-84) scored 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Montaneras have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 12-3 record behind leader Gigantes. Newly promoted Lady Cardinals still closes the standings with 15 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
