Regular Season Round 8: Vardar - Strumica 62-93
Date: December 24, 2016
Bottom-ranked Vardar Apave (0-8) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 93-62 loss to sixth ranked Strumica (3-5) in Skopje. The game was mostly controlled by Strumica. Vardar Apave was better in third quarter 23-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Strumica dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Vardar Apave's 40. Strumica forced 20 Vardar Apave turnovers and had a 23-12 advantage in offensive rebounds. The winners were led by naturalized Serbian forward Nenad Zivcevic (203-87, agency: Mansfield and Associates) who scored that evening 20 points (perfect from the field making all nine shots !!!) and Serbian forward Petar Jokic (201-91) supported him with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Even a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds by Jetmir Zekjiri (200-96) did not help to save the game for Vardar Apave. Power forward Daniel Kalov (204-89) added 14 points and 6 rebounds for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Strumica moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Pelister Bitola. Newly promoted Vardar Apave still closes the standings with eight games lost. Strumica's next round opponent will be league's leader Rabotnicki in Skopje and it may be quite challenging game. Vardar Apave will play on the road against Pelister Bitola (#5) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
