Regular Season Round 16: Zalgiris - Crvena Zvezda 61-77

Rather expected game when 12th ranked Lithuanian Zalgiris (6-10) lost to ninth ranked Serbian Crvena Zvezda (8-8) in Kaunas 61-77 on Friday. The game was mostly controlled by Crvena Zvezda. Zalgiris was better in third quarter 17-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Zalgiris to just 7 points in first quarter. Crvena Zvezda forced 20 Zalgiris turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. It was a very good performance for forward Marko Simonovic (201-86, agency: BeoBasket) who helped to win the game recording 16 points. Guard Branko Lazic (195-89, agency: BeoBasket) contributed with 15 points and 4 steals (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) for the winners. Paulius Jankunas (205-84) replied with 10 points and 5 rebounds and point guard Lukas Lekavicius (180-94) added 6 points and 7 assists in the effort for Zalgiris. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Crvena Zvezda have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending Serbian champion moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Anadolu Efes and Darussafaka. Defending Lithuanian champion Zalgiris keep the twelfth position with ten games lost. Crvena Zvezda will face higher ranked Fenerbahce (#5) in Istanbul in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Zalgiris will play on the road against Galatasaray (#16) in Istanbul and hope to win that game.
