Second Stage Round 5: Groningen - Benfica 81-78

A very interesting game took place in Groningen. It ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 4th placed Portuguese Benfica (0-5) to third ranked Dutch Groningen (3-2) 81-78 on Tuesday evening. Groningen shot 24 for 34 from the free-throw line, while Benfica only scored six points from the stripe. They outrebounded Benfica 39-28 including 32 on the defensive glass. 26 personal fouls committed by Benfica helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American point guard Lance Jeter (191-88, college: Nebraska) nailed 29 points and 6 assists for the winning side and his fellow American import forward Chase Fieler (203-92, college: FGCU) accounted for 17 points and 11 rebounds. Four Groningen players scored in double figures. Angolan-Portuguese guard Carlos Morais (200-85, agency: Duran International) came up with 21 points and American Derek Raivio (190-84, college: Gonzaga) added 21 points and 4 assists respectively for Benfica in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Defending Dutch champion moved-up to second place in Group P, which they share with Lukoil Acad. Benfica at the other side still closes the standings with five games lost. Groningen's next round opponent will be league's second-placed Lukoil Acad. in Sofia and it will be for sure the game of the week. Benfica will play at home against the league's leader Enisey and hopes to get finally their first victory.
