Regular Season Round 24: Al Ahli - Al Rayyan 67-94
Date: January 24, 2017
Another interesting game was again a derby between two teams from Doha: Al Rayyan (#4) and Al Ahli (#7). Al Ahli was smashed at home by 27 points 67-94 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. The game without a history. Al Rayyan led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Al Ahli's 30. Al Rayyan forced 24 Al Ahli turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 27 assists comparing to just 14 passes made by Al Ahli's players. Worth to mention a great performance of American center Marcus Bell (206-90, college: CS Stanislaus) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 26 points and 16 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field) and international swingman Mohd Hassan Mohamed (191-91) who added 26 points and 8 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was Serbian point guard Branko Jereminov (186-87) with a triple-double by scoring 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists and Ndoye Seydou Elhadj scored 24 points and 7 rebounds. Al Ahli's coach gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Defending champion maintains fourth position with 7-4 record. Al Ahli lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the sixth place with seven games lost. They share the position with Al Shamal. Al Rayyan will play against bottom-ranked Al Khor (#10) on the road in the next round where they are favorite. Al Ahli's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Doha to the arena Al Gharafa.
