Regular Season Round 28: Al Gharafa - Al Rayyan 102-82

Date: February 21, 2017
The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Doha: Al Gharafa (#2) and Al Rayyan (#4). Al Gharafa (16-1) smashed visiting Al Rayyan (11-6) by 20 points 102-82. The game was mostly controlled by Al Gharafa. Al Rayyan managed to win second period 24-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Al Gharafa shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 70.6 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Sammy Monroe (198-85, college: Newberry) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 23 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals and Senegalese Hassino Ndoye (-92) who added 24 points during the contest. Monroe is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. At the losing side American guard Jamal Shabazz (198-94, college: Samford) responded with 29 points and 5 rebounds and the former international forward Tanguy Ngombo (197-84) scored 21 points and 8 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Al Gharafa have an impressive eight-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 16-1 record having just one point less than leader El Jaysh. Defending champion Al Rayyan keeps the fourth place with six games lost. Al Gharafa will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Al Rayyan will play at home against Al Wakrah (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
