Regular Season Round 16: Aguada - Arecibo 88-91

The most surprising game was another loss of top-ranked Santeros (12-3) in Coamo on Monday night. Hosts were edged by sixth ranked Capitanes (7-8) 91-88. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 24-20. But Santeros won second period 21-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Capitanes made 18-of-22 free shots (81.8 percent) during the game. Strangely Santeros outrebounded Capitanes 38-22 including a 15-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international point guard Denis Clemente (183-86, college: Kansas St.) who helped to win the game recording 26 points and 4 assists and the former international swingman David Huertas (195-87, college: Mississippi) who added 24 points and 4 assists during the contest. At the losing side Dominican guard Rigoberto Mendoza (190-92) responded with 21 points and international point guard Alex Abreu (180-91, college: W.Georgia) scored 15 points and 5 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Santeros' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Defending champion maintains sixth position with 7-8 record. Santeros at the other side still keep top place with three games lost. Capitanes are looking forward to face higher ranked Caciques (#4) in Humacao in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Santeros will play on the road against Atleticos in San German and are hoping to win this game.
