Seventh-ranked Vaqueros (9-14) made lots of trouble for first ranked Santeros (17-4) in Bayamon on Monday. The visitors from Coamo managed to secure only one-point victory 73-72. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests trailed by 5 points at the halftime before their 24-15 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Santeros made 18-of-22 free shots (81.8 percent) during the game. 25 personal fouls committed by Vaqueros helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was Dominican guard Rigoberto Mendoza (190-92) who scored 20 points and 8 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Egyptian-American center Omar Samhan (211-88, college: St.Mary's, CA) chipped in 19 points and 8 rebounds. Cuban center Ismael Romero (203-91, agency: Paris Global Sports) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 11 rebounds and international point guard Javier Gonzalez (185-89, college: N.Carolina St.) added 13 points and 5 assists respectively for the hosts. Four Vaqueros players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Santeros have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 17-4 record. Vaqueros at the other side keep the seventh position with 14 games lost. Santeros will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Vaqueros will play at home against Brujos (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
