Regular Season Round 24: Arecibo - Ponce 70-90
Date: May 24, 2017
We could consider it a predictable result in the game between close teams when fifth ranked Leones (10-11) crushed one of their biggest challengers Capitanes (11-12) in Arecibo 90-70. After very bad start, Capitanes stormed back in the second period cutting the deficit to 1 point 38-37. But it was not enough and Leones took back the control in second half. They also forced 20 Capitanes turnovers. 28 personal fouls committed by Capitanes helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was Dominican Victor Liz (193-86) who scored 34 points (!!!) and 5 assists. American power forward Eric Dawson (206-84, college: Midwestern St., agency: Haylett Sports) chipped in 8 points and 8 rebounds. Dawson is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international swingman David Huertas (195-87, college: Mississippi) who recorded 28 points and 5 assists and naturalized American forward Angel Matias (193-92, college: Georgia South) added 15 points and 8 rebounds respectively. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Leones maintains fifth position with 10-11 record. Defending champion Capitanes keep the fourth place with 12 games lost. Leones' next round opponent will be Atleticos (#8) in San German.
