Regular Season Round 35: Ponce - Bayamon 85-73

There was no surprise in Juana Diaz where 7th ranked Vaqueros (13-19) were defeated by fifth ranked Leones (17-15) 85-73. It looked good early as Vaqueros took a 8-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Leones had a 29-8 second period charge getting the lead and Vaqueros were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 73-85. Leones made 16-of-21 charity shots (76.2 percent) during the game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. It was an exceptional evening for American power forward Eric Dawson (206-84, college: Midwestern St., agency: Haylett Sports) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 13 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. Dominican Victor Liz (193-86, agency: Basket Management Solutions) accounted for 21 points (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!) for the winning side. Dawson is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Leones players scored in double figures. Cuban center Ismael Romero (203-91, agency: Paris Global Sports) came up with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds and Nigerian center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, college: Chicago St., agency: BeoBasket) added 7 points and 10 rebounds respectively for Vaqueros in the defeat. Vaqueros' coach rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Leones moved-up to fourth place. Vaqueros at the other side dropped to the eighth position with 19 games lost. Leones' next round opponent will be Brujos (#7) in Guayama. Vaqueros will play on the road against Piratas in Quebradillas and hope to win that game.
