Regular Season Round 5: Estudiantes L. - Gijon 79-74

Very expected game in Lugo where bottom-ranked Gijon (0-3) was defeated by ninth ranked Estudiantes L. (2-1) 79-74 on Sunday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts trailed by 4 points after three quarters before their 28-19 charge, which allowed them to win the game. The best player for the winners was point guard Marcos Ruiz (176-95) who scored 20 points, 6 assists and 4 steals. Lithuanian Rimantas Daunys (204-97) chipped in 16 points and 9 rebounds. Four Estudiantes L. players scored in double figures. American forward Malik Wineglass (203, college: Harris-Stowe St.) produced a double-double by scoring 23 points and 15 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) and the other American import swingman James Pegues (198-93, college: Newman) added 20 points and 11 rebounds respectively for the guests. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Estudiantes L. moved-up to fifth place in Group A-B, which they share with Chantada and Naron. Loser Gijon still closes the standings with three games lost. Estudiantes L. will face Betanzos (#11) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Gijon will play against Naron (#7) and looks forward to get finally their first victory.
