Regular Season Round 5: Baskonia - Panathinaikos 85-84

Spanish Baskonia has registered their first victory this season after four consecutive losses. The win is especially important as they edged much higher ranked Greek Panathinaikos (2-3) 85-84 on Thursday. Panathinaikos were trailing by 2 points at halftime but managed to get 4-point lead after three quarters before a 22-17 charge of Baskonia, which allowed them to win the game. They shot the lights out from three sinking 13 long-distance shots on high 52.0 percentage. The best player for the winners was Uruguayan-Italian guard Jayson Granger (189-89) who scored 20 points. French guard Rodrigue Beaubois (185-88) chipped in 15 points. Granger is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. American-Greek point guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 14 assists and American power forward Chris Singleton (206-89, college: Florida St.) added 15 points and 6 rebounds respectively for the guests. Four Baskonia and five Panathinaikos players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Baskonia (1-4) left bottom position moving up to fourteenth place, which they share with EA7 Armani. Defending Greek champion Panathinaikos dropped to the ninth position with three games lost. They share it with 4 other teams. Baskonia will meet higher ranked Khimki (#3) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Panathinaikos will play against the league's leader Olympiacos (#1) and will have a slim chance for a victory.
