FIBA Europe Cup
Regular Season Round 4: Nevezis - Benfica 94-68
Date: November 8, 2017
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Portuguese Benfica (1-3) against fourth ranked Lithuanian Nevezis (2-2) on Wednesday night. Visiting Benfica was crushed by Nevezis in Kedainiai 94-68. It was a key game for the second position in Group B. The game was mostly controlled by Nevezis. Benfica was better in third quarter 23-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Benfica 49-23 including a 15-4 advantage in offensive rebounds. Nevezis players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. The winners were led by American guard James Woodard (191-94, college: Tulsa) who scored that evening 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists and Ukrainian center Vladyslav Koreniuk (210-94, agency: Octagon Europe) supported him with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Five Nevezis players scored in double figures. Even 15 points and 5 assists by American forward Antywane Robinson (203-84, college: Temple) did not help to save the game for Benfica. Angolan-Portuguese guard Carlos Morais (200-85, agency: Duran International) added 17 points for lost side. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Nevezis moved-up to second place in Group B, which they share with Avtodor. Benfica lost third consecutive game. Defending Portuguese champion dropped to the fourth position with three games lost. Nevezis' next round opponent will be Avtodor (#3) in Saratov, which may be the game of the day. Benfica will play at home against the league's leader Bakken and hope to win that game.
