There was a minor upset when one of their biggest challengers BBC Bayreuth (17-9) was defeated at home by sixth ranked EWE Baskets (17-9) 102-98. Austrian-Slovenian center Rasid Mahalbasic (210-90, agency: BeoBasket) notched 22 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) to lead the effort and American swingman Rickey Paulding (196-82, college: Missouri) supported him with 23 points and 8 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). EWE Baskets' coach Mladen Drijencic allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Even 30 points and 5 rebounds by American guard Gabe York (190-93, college: Arizona) did not help to save the game for BBC Bayreuth. His fellow American import Nate Linhart (201-86, college: Akron) added 13 points and 4 assists for the hosts. Four EWE Baskets and five BBC Bayreuth players scored in double figures. EWE Baskets have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Bayreuth. EWE Baskets' next round opponent will be league's leader Bayern Muenchen at home and it may be the game of the week. BBC Bayreuth will play against Giessen 46ers and hope to win that game.
