Regular Season Round 5: Arecibo - Ponce 81-78

Fourth defeat of league's leader Leones (4-4) against fourth ranked Capitanes (4-3) 81-78 was the most important game of the last round. Leones trailed by 11 points at halftime and as many as 12 after three quarters before a 29-20 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 78-81 at the end of the game. Nigerian center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, college: Chicago St., agency: BeoBasket) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 14 rebounds. The former international guard Guillermo Diaz (188-85, college: Miami, FL) contributed with 19 points (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) for the winners. The former international swingman Angel-Daniel Vassallo (198-86, college: Virginia Tech) answered with 24 points and American forward Michael Young (206-94, college: Pittsburgh) added 18 points in the effort for Leones. Leones' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Capitanes have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Bayamon. Leones at the other side dropped to the fifth position with four games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Quebradillas. Leones will play next round against strong Vaqueros trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Capitanes will try to continue on its current victory against seventh ranked Santeros in Coamo.
