Smart Belize outgunned Belize City in the NEBL Finals opener. Hurricanes held Defenders to an opponent 22.9 percent shooting from the field compared to 36.4 percent accuracy of the winners. Hurricanes forced 20 Defenders turnovers and outrebounded them 59-40 including a 36-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. International point guard Glency Lopez stepped up and scored 18 points and 7 assists for the winners and international Brian White (196-95, college: Wesley) chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds. At the losing side American forward Nigel Jones (201-90, college: Talladega) responded with 7 points and 8 rebounds and the former international forward Darwin Leslie (191-81) scored 3 points and 4 assists. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games.
