Not a big story in a game when bottom-ranked Canberra Gunners (0-17) were defeated at home by fifth ranked Mount Gambier Pioneers (9-9) 80-68 on Saturday. Mount Gambier Pioneers dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Canberra Gunners' 36. It was a great evening for American guard Alex Marzette (196-93, college: Robert Morris) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 12 rebounds. The former international guard Tom Daly (182-91) helped adding 23 points and 4 assists. Four Mount Gambier Pioneers players scored in double figures. At the losing side center Ben Allen (211-86, college: St.Mary's, CA) responded with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists (made all of his seven free throws) and American center Eric Gaff (208-87, college: Grace Coll.) scored 9 points and 11 rebounds. Mount Gambier Pioneers maintains fifth place in League with 9-9 record. Loser Canberra Gunners still closes the standings with 17 games lost. Mount Gambier Pioneers will face higher ranked Geelong Supercats (#3) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Canberra Gunners will play against Bandits (#6) in Albury and hope to get finally their first victory.
