Second Stage Round 4: Arecibo - Bayamon 93-72
Date: August 15, 2018
The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Vaqueros (3-3) in Arecibo. Visitors were rolled over by Capitanes (4-2) 93-72. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The game was mostly controlled by Capitanes. Vaqueros was better in fourth quarter 24-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Capitanes had a 38-24 advantage in offensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 29 assists comparing to just 14 passes made by Vaqueros' players. Worth to mention a great performance of naturalized U.S. Virgin Islands point guard Walter Hodge (183-86, college: Florida) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 21 points, 5 rebounds and 13 assists and Nigerian-American power forward Chinemelu Elonu (206-87, college: Texas A&M) who added 20 points and 17 rebounds during the contest. Four Capitanes players scored in double figures. At the losing side Cuban center Ismael Romero (203-91) responded with 13 points and 8 rebounds and forward Benito Santiago (198-89, college: Cumberlands) scored 15 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Capitanes maintains first position with 4-2 record which they share with defeated Vaqueros. Vaqueros at the other side still keep top place with three games lost. Capitanes will play against league's second-placed Piratas in Quebradillas in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Vaqueros will play at home against the league's second-placed Piratas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
