Regular Season Round 21: Aomori Watts - Gunma 53-82

Rather expected game when 6th ranked Aomori Watts (6-15) were crushed at home by third ranked Gunma (13-8) 82-53 on Sunday. Gunma dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Aomori Watts' 24. They outrebounded Aomori Watts 45-29 including a 29-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. Gunma looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. Nigerian forward Abdullahi Kuso (206-84, college: Tallahassee CC) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 blocks (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winners and American forward Thomas Kennedy (201-87, college: Detroit Mercy) chipped in 22 points and 6 rebounds. Gunma's coach Fujitaka Hiraoka felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was point guard Toshio Kan (184-94) with a double-double by scoring 12 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists and American forward Cullen Russo (206-94, college: Fresno St.) scored 16 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Gunma have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They maintain third place with 13-8 record having five points less than leader Kumamoto V. Aomori Watts lost seventh consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with 15 games lost. Gunma will face Yamagata (#4) at home in the next round. Aomori Watts will play against the league's second-placed Sendai 89ers and hope to win that game.
