Regular Season Round 21: Panathinaikos - Anadolu Efes 88-75

We should mention about the upset which took place in Athens, where 4th placed Turkish Anadolu Efes (14-7) lost to eleventh ranked Greek Panathinaikos (9-12) in a road game 75-88 on Friday. The game was mostly controlled by Panathinaikos. Anadolu Efes managed to win second period 21-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Panathinaikos dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to Anadolu Efes' 34. They outrebounded Anadolu Efes 39-26 including a 31-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Panathinaikos looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American-Greek point guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 8 rebounds and 13 assists for the winners and American power forward James Gist (206-86, college: Maryland) chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds. The best for the losing side was Croatian swingman Krunoslav Simon (197-85) with 14 points and French guard Rodrigue Beaubois (185-88, agency: BeoBasket) scored 15 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending Greek champion moved-up to tenth place, which they share with Maccabi T-A. Anadolu Efes at the other side keep the fourth position with seven games lost. Panathinaikos will meet league's leader Fenerbahce in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Anadolu Efes will play against Gran Canaria and hope to secure a win.
