Valencia upset Gernika on the road in the opener. Valencia had a 31-16 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Valencia especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 66.7 percentage. Point guard Anna Gomez (181-86) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 13 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and the former international power forward Maria Pina (187-87) chipped in 17 points and 5 rebounds. Four Valencia players scored in double figures. At the losing side Ukrainian center Valeriya Berezhynska (193-86, college: Rice) responded with 16 points and 5 rebounds and Canadian-British guard Rachael Vanderwal (175-83, college: Boston U.) scored 14 points and 6 assists. Gernika's coach Mario Lopez rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help.
