Groningen nipped Leiden on the road in the opener. The guests trailed by 8 points at the halftime before their 22-10 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Americans were the main players on the court. Guard Teddy Gipson (191-80, college: Arkansas) stepped up and scored 9 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and point guard Lance Jeter (191-88, college: Nebraska) chipped in 14 points and 5 assists. Groningen's coach Erik Braal used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side guard Darius Thompson (193-95, college: WKU) responded with 24 points and 4 steals and point guard Maurice Watson (178-93, college: Creighton) scored 15 points and 9 assists. Four Leiden players scored in double figures.
