La Paz crushed Obregon in the opener. Mantarrayas made 29-of-32 charity shots (90.6 percent) during the game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. Cuban guard Reynaldo Garcia (187-90) nailed a double-double by scoring 23 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists for the winning side and American center Benjamin Puckett (205-83, college: Clayton St.) accounted for 18 points and 11 rebounds. American swingman Glen Rice-Jr (198-91, college: Georgia Tech) came up with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists and the other American import power forward Germain Jordan (198-86, college: Dillard) added 25 points (made all of his nine free throws !!!) respectively for Halcones de Ciudad Obregon in the defeat. Five Mantarrayas and four Halcones de Ciudad Obregon players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games.
