Regular Season Round 19: Iraklis - Ionikos Nikaias 107-75
Date: March 1, 2020
Everything could happen in Thessaloniki at the game between two tied teams. Both ninth ranked Iraklis and 8th ranked Ionikos Nikaias had identical 8-10 record. This time Iraklis used a home court advantage and smashed the opponent from Nikaias 107-75 on Sunday night. The game was mostly controlled by Iraklis. Ionikos Nikaias was better in fourth quarter 31-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Iraklis dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Ionikos Nikaias' 26 and made 21-of-23 free shots (91.3 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Ionikos Nikaias 49-24 including a 35-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. Iraklis looked well-organized offensively handing out 31 assists comparing to just 15 passes made by Ionikos Nikaias' players. It was a great evening for Canadian guard Olivier Hanlan (193-93, college: Boston Coll., agency: Wasserman) who led his team to a victory scoring 22 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. American forward Alex Davis (206-92, college: Fresno St.) helped adding 18 points and 11 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Five Iraklis players scored in double figures. At the losing side Dutch power forward Roeland Schaftenaar (211-88, college: Oregon St.) responded with 9 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists and Vagel Sakellariou (195-89, agency: Octagon Europe) scored 12 points and 6 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Iraklis. They moved-up to seventh place. Ionikos Nikaias at the other side, also newcomer in the league, keeps the eighth position with 11 games lost. Iraklis will face league's second-placed AEK in Athens in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Ionikos Nikaias will play at home against the league's leader Panathinaikos (#1) having rather not much hope for a victory.
