Regular Season Round 5: Loewen - Herford 83-110

There was a small surprise when tenth ranked Herford (2-2) rolled over on the road 7th ranked Hertener Loewen (2-3) 110-83 on Saturday. They outrebounded Hertener Loewen 45-31 including 32 on the defensive glass. Herford looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Hertener Loewen's players. Hertener Loewen was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. Lithuanian forward Vaidotas Volkus (203-85, college: Redlands CC) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 10 rebounds. Point guard Ole Wendt (190-92) contributed with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals for the winners. Five Herford players scored in double figures. American forward Lavon Hightower (198-96, college: MWSU) answered with 30 points and 9 rebounds and naturalized Greek guard Luca Bambullis (-97) added 23 points in the effort for Hertener Loewen. Hertener Loewen's coach gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Herford moved-up to sixth place in West, which they share with Hagen BG and Leverkusen 2. Loser Hertener Loewen dropped to the ninth position with three games lost. Herford will face Dorsten (#10) at home in the next round. Hertener Loewen will play against Leverkusen 2 and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
