Regular Season Round 9: Gran Canaria - Baskonia 71-75

Everything went according to plan in Las Palmas where fifth ranked Baskonia (6-3) beat bottom-ranked Gran Canaria (1-7) 75-71 on Sunday. Baskonia forced 20 Gran Canaria turnovers. Gran Canaria was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. Italian center Achille Polonara (202-91) stepped up and scored 15 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and Slovenian forward Zoran Dragic (196-89) chipped in 17 points. Four Baskonia players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was French point guard Andrew Albicy (177-90) with 19 points and 6 assists and American power forward Matt Costello (206-93, college: Michigan St.) scored 19 points, 6 rebounds and 5 blocks (perfect from the field making all eight shots !!!). Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Defending champion moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Joventut. Gran Canaria lost their seventh game in a row. They dropped to the bottom position with seven games lost. Baskonia will face Bilbao (#17) at home in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Gran Canaria will play against UCAM Murcia and hope to win that game.
