Regular Season Round 11: Etha - Apollon 72-73 OT

Seventh-ranked Etha (3-7) made lots of trouble for second ranked Apollon (8-2) in Nicosia on Thursday. The visitors from Limassol managed to secure only one-point victory 73-72. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Etha won third quarter 17-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening, at least not yet. The game turned upside-down in the last quarter, where Etha used huge pressure winning it 22-17 getting a tie at the end of regular time. They lost eventually overtime period 5-6. Apollon forced 22 Etha turnovers. Strangely Etha outrebounded Apollon 49-35 including a 37-26 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was the former international guard Panagiotis Markou (189-96) who scored 18 points and 7 assists. American power forward Justin Baker (203-89, college: Utah Valley) chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds. Baker is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. American power forward Eden Ewing (204-97, college: Texas Southern) produced a double-double by scoring 24 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocks and the other American import guard Chris McNeal (185-97, college: Cincinnati) added 24 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) respectively for the hosts. Apollon keeps a position of league leader. Etha lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the eighth place with seven games lost. Apollon will face APOP (#6) in Paphou in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Etha will play on the road against AEK Larnaca and hope to win that game.
